Postpartum depression is a common emotional response that occurs after childbirth and may include mood swings, crying spells and anxiety. These symptoms may develop as a result of the physical, emotional and hormonal changes that occur during this major time, and is more likely to develop in patients with a family history of depression. While many new mothers experience what is known as baby blues after childbirth, postpartum depression is classified as symptoms that last more than two weeks.
Treatment for postpartum depression depends on the severity of the condition and each patient’s individual needs, but may include counseling, antidepressants, hormone therapy or a combination of these approaches. Mild cases often improve on their own within a few days or weeks.
